Get a copy of the South Beach Quick and Easy Cookbook.

Try some of the recipes in it. He doesn't have to go on the very low carb diet they suggest, but the recipes in this book will help you keep him on track.

He should get a glucometer and test every morning before breakfast and an hour after supper to see how he's doing.

Ask your doctor to prescribe one and also a minimum of 3 test strips per day.

He can eat potatoes, but should really limit the amounts. Try to keep it under 1 cup of potatoes at suppertime. Less would be better, but you may have to cut him back gradually.

There is a low carb potato that you might be able to find. Ask at your supermarket. Chances are they won't even have heard of it, but they might carry it.

Have a look at my blog, I have a couple of recipes posted, and some recommended reading, etc. The book by Gretchen Becker is quite good and so is the Diabetes for Dummies.

Borderline diabetes IS diabetes, its just not bad enough to warrent using insulin yet. Your doc isn't doing you any favours if he doesn't get your husband to take this very seroiusly and get it under control now.

If he is borderline, he should really look at going on a diet and exercising. Researchers are finding that reducing your body weight by 10% has an impact on your blood glucose levels.

Follow these 4 simple rules:
1) Eat less food (keep him around 2000 calories)
2) If God made it; it's OK
3) eat more fruits and vegetables
4) Eat food (not chemicals)

Add in exercise (start with walking) since he is a big man. he'll see the weigh t melt off.

You'll notice I did not answer the question about potatoes. if you follow those four rules, you'll see the answer yourself. since you are responsible for his eating, read up on diabetic nutrition. He can still have his meat and potatoes but in smaller portions (remember rule 1). Look for lean meats. limit his carbs (bread, sugar, pasta). have him eat more fruits and vegetables.

Following this will keep him from developing diabetes.

Potatoes are rich in carbs its better to avoid. but any way if he insists sweet potatoes are better than normal potatoes.

He can eat every thing but in moderate quantities. If he doest takes care ,borderline can be tranformed into type 2.

Knowledge is best friend. Your doctors will help, but they can't be with you 24/7, so he will be the key person in controlling his pre-diabetes.

Learn and make him learn as much about diabetes as you can.

Remember the saying that the best way to live a long life is to get a chronic disease, because it makes you take care of yourself. Many people who take charge of their type 2 diabetes lose weight, start exercising, eat healthy foods that are actually tastier than the junk foods they've been eating, and feel healthier and more energetic than they have in years.

Think positive. Diabetes can't be cured yet, but it can be controlled.

With knowledge, you can succeed.
