What is the normal fasting blood sugar for an 11 year old child?
I have type 2 and I took my son’s blood sugar (fasting) this a.m. and it was 114. I was wondering if that was on the high side , I believe the normal is 110 and below, but not sure. Thanks in advance!

For a non diabetic person, a normal fasting runs between 70 and 100.
120 was the old standard and its too high. Most endos don’t use it and many doctors won’t either.
You can’t tell how accurate your meter is, so don’t worry. It might be reading a bit high. Meters are allowed by law to be up to 20% off either way. They show changes more accurately than actual readings.
The only way to know for sure if your son is diabetic or prediabetic is to get him tested at a lab. Your doctor might do a fasting test if you explain why you are concerned. I think it would be a good idea to ask for one.
If the fasting lab test is still high, then ask your doctor to do a glucose tolerance test and an HbA1c. These tests give a more complete picture of what’s going on.
By the way, normal blood sugar levels are the same no matter what your age or gender.
And, what is considered normal for a diabetic is not the same as what’s normal for a healthy person, so you can’t go by what your goals are as a diabetic. His needs to be lower than what you were told to aim for.
It’s a little on the up side, but nothing to panic about. I’ve gotten as high/higher readings in the mornings. If you’re worried, head to your pediatrician.
I use a different monitor so the readings are different, but it should be between 4 and 5 if you use an "optium xceed" monitor from medisense
Blood sugars should be about 90 to 120. I ahve been diabetic for many years. Anyone shoudl do everything they can to avoid it because now I suffer form very serious complications. I didn’t take care of myself properly and boy am I paying for it now! My kidney function is really bad and I am extremely anemic from it and have to take epogen shots all the time to even make blood. Diabetes is a really awful disease. If its type 1, you can’t help getting that sometimes, the luck of the draw I guess. But you can strive always to be helathy and avoid type 2 most of the time. Eat healthy foods, exercise and take good care of yourself always. Believe me, your body will thank you in years to come.

If you’re worried, of course the best bet is to check with your doctor.

KR, you can’t help getting type 1 EVER, it’s an autoimmune disorder that cannot be prevented.
