If it’s bilateral that usually signifies something more serious. Unilateral causes are mostly due to some sort of trauma. In your case, there is something compressing the nerve root in a more central fashion, such as within the spinal columns. It could be a tumor or it could be something like scleroderma, a disease which causes hardening of the skin and blood vessels.
Your doctor should order imaging of your arms and back and should order rheumatologic bloodwork to look for scleroderma and other diseases.
