I have been feeling like I was getting an UTI , fever, frequency urinating, buring, ect. At first signs I started taking 3 (1680mg) cranberry pills 3x daily, drinking water, taking cycstic and goldenseal root and echinacea for over a week, now I just used an AZO test strip and it showed positive for wbc’s in urine at the darkest level. I wanted to get better without prescription medicines because I do not have insurance. Can anyone help?

Best glucose meter?

Hi guys! See, I have seen this question asked before but the newest one is from a year ago, the thing is that my dad has been diagnosed with diabetes (do not know which type though) and we know nothing about these things. Is there a glucose meter that is better or more convenient than other? And if there is one on the market that does not require stripes or to pinch fingers?

Thanks for all your help!
Forgot to mention, my dad is 64 yo
lilboomer25, Thank you for your info, and the tip of the side pinch…unfortunately my dad lives in Mexico and has no insurance like in the US.

T H, Thanks for your advice, I myself am learning along with this. I want my dad to live the best he can and controlled.
Don C, awesome!! thank you very much! :)
Very nice of you Chris, I will definitively check your website.
Ms M, I will take a look at that and see what the thing is about, thank you very much! :)

I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I have been monitoring my sugar levels for a little over a year now anyways, because I was pre-diabetic/insulin resistant. Anyways, my insurance will no longer carry my test strips and I need to switch to a different brand, so I am out for the weekend. I feel blind not being able to check my sugars 2 hrs. post meals. Although they normally never get over 180 or so, I still feel paranoid that without my strips it could shoot up to the 300′s or something. I was wanting to know if anyone could tell me what point does hyperglycemia become a life threat? 200, 300, 400, how high? I keep a pretty strict diet, so the chances of it getting over 200 are slim, considering that a dose of 100g carbs only brought my sugar to 240 an hour later. Still I am concerned. My doctor seems to think I will be fine until monday without checking myself. In fact she says I check to often. I just want to make sure I never develop horrible diabetic complications. I know there are not really any "symptoms" besides thirst, hunger, and frequent urination.

So, my question is: When I do get my strips and I check my sugar, when does it become an emergency that would require immediate medical attention.

I hear of people having to go to the hospital for insulin drips and such, but I believe they were in the high 500/600 range. I just want to put my mind at ease and know when to take action.

Thanks

do I have a case against the pharmasist?

I want to know if I have any sort of a legal case?
Well about a year ago my daughter 11 yrs old. had problems with very low blood sugar & the peditrician that we had made me test her 3 times a day and as she was symptomatic. Well the Dr.my daughter seen left the practice just recently about 8 months ago & handed it on to another doc in the mean time. Well the new Dr. called in more refills for my daughters script (glucose test strips) and I kept treating her as the previous Dr. told me to do.
In the mean time The pharmacy where I go to which is the only pharmacy near my town, has been filling the script. A few times during gym the nurse had to test & retest my daughter due to hypoglycemia and the nurse used a quite a few strips so I called the pharmacy they filled them early like 6 days early. Well the pharmasist got mad and told me that I was abusing my daughters test strips and told me that I cannot get them filled early anymore although my insurance covered them early and refused to give me my daughters strips. He then accused me for using them myself or giving them to someone else!
So I called my insurance company and they told me they would call the pharmacy and make sure they would be dispersed and the pharmacy still would not! In desperation and lack of other resources I called the Dr.s office and they said I would have to think of something different because the pharmasist called and told them I was misusing the stips for something other than my daughter and suggested to the doc that he cancel the script, the doc cancelled them and told me to go find another doc who would fill them. I was embarassed and mad knowing that I woulkd not abuse such a thing and my daughter needs them.
So I went to the pharmacy to buy some over the counter so she could have some to bring to school with her and the pharmacy told me no. so my daughter had to go to school & play a soccer game without strips because of this. She is a hypoglycemic and has no strips. I have no other way of getting them and I am a scared Mom for her.
Not to mention that is the only pharmacy wothin 2 1/2 hr drive and they wont help. Also the way the pharmacist humiliated me and made things difficult tees me off. Do I have any leagal cases on this? What should be my next step? Thank You

I am a diabetic on insulin. Another insulin dependent diabetic told me about how great Byetta is. I tried it, and I love it. Her doc wrote her a prescription. I finally got mine to write me one. My insurance company denied preauthorization saying Byetta is not FDA approved for insulin users. I was also denied because there was no record of me using metformin or TZD. I did use these, but I got bad diarrhea.. I don’t know why my friend’s insurance company approved her, but I got denied by mine. I have coverage through Coventry. Is there any way I can get approval?

I remember in 3/2003 insurance in this country was great. I remember my insurance for me and my 3 sons was about 55 bucks a week. If we went to the emergency room we had a 25 dollar deductible. All of my prescriptions not matter what brand was 5 dollars and for some brands I had to pay nothing. No insurance weekly rates are at least 40 dollars higher a week. If you go to the emergency room it is going to hurt you badly. I’m a diabetic and when I went to get my test strips with insurance I had to pay full price. What happened to health insurance in the country?

How does everyone afford to treat Diabetes?

I’m asking because my boyfriend is recently diagnosed with Diabetes. The past two months, with all the Metformin, Avandia, Lantus, Novalog, needles, gauze, alcohol, meter strips, etc. We are struggling. His health insurance only provides 00 gross towards prescriptions PER YEAR. We are very quickly coming up on that 00 and it hasn’t even been 6 months. I’m curious to know, are we doing something wrong? Why can’t we afford this treatment? It seems like a good many Americans have Diabetes, how does everyone else afford the many prescriptions? We’re freaking out, because we don’t have the money for rent, gas, food, etc. We feel like the Diabetes treatment has to come first, but all these co-pays for specialists and prescriptions has drained our wallets, we can’t buy food, nevermind entertainment. How does everyone else afford this?! What can we do?

I’m thinking about getting life insurance in the next few months. Does it make sense to take some medications to lower my cholesterol before I take the life insurance screening tests? Would the tests detect the drugs? And would that make a difference in my premium? In other words, is it better to take the drugs, have lower cholesterol, and have the drug detected in my blood? Or have the higher cholesterol and no drug in my system? Thanks!

Januvia and Avandia together?

Has anyone’s doctor perscribed both Avandia and Januvia for Type II Diabetes to take at the same time? I have very little confidance in my moms physician and am working with her insurance to find someone new. My concern is that her diabetes ( for which she has not had a blood glucose test in like 2 years) has never been "out of control". Her Dr. has her taking Avandia AND Januvia. I also think she is overprescribed for other health issues as well. But I wanted to ask you guys :)

work secrets?

some examples are…….. if you have an overdue video send it to another store. they will put it as FOS (found on shelf) and delete the overdue late fee. always get an itemized bill when you visit a DR. you will always be over billed since insurance pays for it. If your diabetic and need a meter call one of the major manufactuersand tell them yours broke. They will send a new one and not ask for the old one back.
