Health Insurance for Type 1 Diabetes?

My husband has Type 1 diabetes and will need to go on a personal health insurance plan. The ones we found are an outrageous expense. Does anyone know of a good company that supports type 1 diabetics?

I am thinking of becoming self-employed, and have heard that if one is on injectable insulin, it is impossible to get health insurance. Is this right?

I remember in 3/2003 insurance in this country was great. I remember my insurance for me and my 3 sons was about 55 bucks a week. If we went to the emergency room we had a 25 dollar deductible. All of my prescriptions not matter what brand was 5 dollars and for some brands I had to pay nothing. No insurance weekly rates are at least 40 dollars higher a week. If you go to the emergency room it is going to hurt you badly. I’m a diabetic and when I went to get my test strips with insurance I had to pay full price. What happened to health insurance in the country?

How does everyone afford to treat Diabetes?

I’m asking because my boyfriend is recently diagnosed with Diabetes. The past two months, with all the Metformin, Avandia, Lantus, Novalog, needles, gauze, alcohol, meter strips, etc. We are struggling. His health insurance only provides 00 gross towards prescriptions PER YEAR. We are very quickly coming up on that 00 and it hasn’t even been 6 months. I’m curious to know, are we doing something wrong? Why can’t we afford this treatment? It seems like a good many Americans have Diabetes, how does everyone else afford the many prescriptions? We’re freaking out, because we don’t have the money for rent, gas, food, etc. We feel like the Diabetes treatment has to come first, but all these co-pays for specialists and prescriptions has drained our wallets, we can’t buy food, nevermind entertainment. How does everyone else afford this?! What can we do?

How much would a pregnancy blood test cost?

I am just wondering, because I took a home test and it came out negative, but after taking plan b i haven’t gotten my period for 2 months now. I am usually insanely regular.

I also don’t have health insurance, and I don’t think Planned Parenthood does blood tests.
I realize it vary’s from clinic to clinic, but just kind of a range of what you think it may be.

I’d like to know if there are available for purchase anywhere in the world blood glucose meters which do NOT require test strips (e.g. using infrared to measure blood glucose levels).
Thanks for the info so far.

Mr. Peachy, while a pinprick is trivial, the cost for test strips isn’t. I have otherwise great health insurance at my workplace, but they don’t cover test strips; this amounts to a box of 50 test strips costing . A sweet deal for the test strip manufacturers.

Even if less accurate, I’d consider paying a large lump sum for a machine that isn’t tied to consumable test strips.

I’ve developed all the symptoms of diabetes and a blood glucose meter has consistently shown my sugars at elevated (300+) levels. I can usually "feel" when my sugars get REALLY high, especially when I’m sleeping because I’ll have to wake up nearly every hour to pee and when I do wake up my mouth is extremely dry. I’ve also got a wound on my foot that’s taken months to heal and it’s still not completely healed.

Anyway, I don’t have any income and no health insurance and I really should be on medication to keep my glucose levels under control, but I don’t know how to get them prescribed to me without paying a couple hundred dollars to see a doctor. I would be able to afford the generic prescription if I could find a way to get it prescribed to me.

Do I have any options?

I am going to buy a meter, but I understand the test strips are the most expensive part of it. I do not have health insurance that would cover the cost, so it really does matter to me.

I have great health insurance, but it does not cover a dietician, and my doctors have no diet advice for me other than what I am already doing, so I need advice. I have been at a plateau of the same exact weight for two years 150 – 5′ 6" with measurements of 36- 25 – 39 (I carry my weight in my legs, hips, and some in the upper arm; but my waist is always small), but several of my doctors (I have other issues steming from having long-time metabolic disorders) told me if I lose more weight that it could improve my condition and increase my odds of not becoming full-blown diabetic. Now, I eat an extemely strict diet of lean meat, tofu, most vegetables, berries, cheese, nuts, and other healthy fats (absolutely no sugar, processed foods, or alcohol); and I exercise by hiking up a steep hill on an average of 3 times a week at 45 min. each time. I cannot cut calories too much, b/c I have to eat 6 small meals a day to prevent my blood sugar from going too low. What should I do to lose weight?

I work part time at Walmart while attending college. I just became eligible for health insurance. I was wondering if anyone could help me choose what plan to get that will help pay for my insulin and other diabetes supplies such as serenges and test strips. I have never had any insurance and neither has my parents. I have paid out of pocket and if the insurance is cheaper than my 0 a month for supplies I wil get it. I just don’t know what to get thanks for the help!

My husband is of an age to retire, but doesn’t plan to do so in the next five or so years. We know that he should be eligible for medicare. Is it possible to have both medicare and his health insurance at work where the expense of his medical bills would be less or non existent?

I’m not really sure how this works. After you’ve met the deductible in a health insurance policy, do you continue to make co-payments, or does it switch to co-insurances? Or does it depend on the plan?
I’m talking about emergency room visits and routine doctor appointments – generally insurance plans allow coverage before the deductible is met.
