Ok, kind-of weird. I have Gestational diabetes that is being controlled by checking my blood sugar 2x a day, and cutting out simple sugars such as reg. pop, candy, cookes, sugary foods, etc…
Well, today I got some fast food, and I ordered a Diet pop, like usual. I’ve been drinking it for so long now, I have a hard time telling if it is diet or regular, unless I can take a sip of regular, then mine to taste the difference. (usually from my hubby’s).
So when I got home, i took a drink of my pop and it didn’t taste diet. I ordered Diet Pepsi, which I usually drink- and this one had a sugary aftertaste and just didn’t seem like diet. So I tested my blood sugar really quick to see- it was 75.
So I went ahead and ate my lunch and decided to drink it, but not a lot (it was a large with a lot of ice, but I only drank about 1/3 of it), and test my B.S. right after lunch, and then again 2 hours later.
(Last time I had a reg. pop was about 2 months ago, and after drinking the tiny regular coke from a McDonald’s happy meal, my blood sugar spiked into the 160’s!)
Well, right after lunch today, it was 97. I started to feel jittery too, and then really tired. Baby was moving around a lot too, but not really a lot more than usual around lunch time. I haven’t felt this way since I last had a sugar rush!
2 hours after starting my lunch, I checked my BS again, and I thought for sure it was high, but it was only 99!

So my question is, how can I tell if I drank diet or regular.. or is there a chance that Gestational Diabetes can go away before baby is born??? I was diagnosed at 29 weeks, and I am now 1 day away from 37 weeks.

btw- I "tested" my pop on a strip with my meter and it just read "high". Just thought I’d try it LOL.

Thanks for your input! :) Ok, just occured to me later this evening… Diet pop still has caffiene in it.. DUH! That explains my jitters! I think everything’s ok…LOL

Gestational Diabetes Test?

I am currently 26 weeks pregnant and going in for my gestational diabetes test this Wednesday. I was just wondering you are supposed to eat before the test or not. I wasn’t given any special instructions from my OBGYN. Did anyone have to fast before the test? Or just eat as normal?

Stress test and gestational diabetes?

I’m 22 weeks pregnant and was wondering what exactly a stress test is while you’re pregnant and when do they normally do them? Also when do they normally test for gestational diabetes? Is it too soon for me to ask my doctor for those tests?

Fasting blood glucose slightly high- worried?

Long story, so bear with me. I am 13 weeks pregnant and was discussing OGTT with my obstetrician yesterday. I can’t have a traditional OGTT done because I have periodic paralysis- the glucose may cause a serious paralytic attack. So instead my doctor decided to give me a blood glucose meter and monitor me over time to see if I am developing gestational diabetes. (I know, it’s kinda early, but he felt it was best to get a baseline.)

He told me to test twice a day- one test as soon as I get up, and another test one hour after a meal. So far so good, but this morning when I tested my blood, the reading was 102 (I hadn’t eaten for about 10 hours). It’s made me kinda nervous, since I have a pretty strong family history of diabetes (my parents and sibling don’t have it, but my grandparents and aunts and uncles do). My post-meal tests have been normal so far, but I can’t help wondering if this might mean pre-diabetes. I did read, though, that illness and stress can cause a change in readings. Right now I have a cold and I sprained my knee, which has had me resting for the last 3 days; could that be causing a high reading? Thank you so much to all who answer!

I took a 3 hour fasting glucose tolerance test at 28 weeks pregnant, and was told that I had gestational diabetes. In my first pregnancy, I tested high on the 1-hour glucose tolerance test, but passed the 3 hour test. So this time when I failed the test, I went to the dietitian and have a follow up appointment with the doctor. I am supposed to monitor my glucose levels: fasting before breakfast, after breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have to admit that I am not following the diet to a tee, but I am using it as a guideline. My fasting reading was 82 this morning. My breakfast was 127, my lunch was 140. I take my reading 1 hour after meals. I was curious to see what my reading was today 2 hours after my lunch and it was down from 140 to 106. What is going on? I am eatting a little more carbs than I am supposed to and my readings are coming back completely normal. Does this mean I am only mildly hyperglycemic? Is it from the diet even though I am kind of cheating on it? Could I not be diabetic at all?

I had my 1hr glucose test @ 24wks. I called my dr’s office today to confirm my 28wks appt next week and the nurse told me that I had a high reading so now I have to get the 3 hr test. Im nervous that I have gestational diabetes. That means alot…special diets… more monitoring ( im already high risk for bp) and a possible big baby. My question to you guys is how may of you have had higher readings with you first glucose test and tested again normal? Also who went on to find out that you had gestational diabetes after the second test? Did you you have to a special diet, have extra monitoring or have a big baby? This so sucks. Please advise ladies who have been through this….Thanx.

Liv~

Anyone fail 1hr. Glucose Challenge Test…?

and then pass the 3hr? (For gestational diabetes)

I failed the first one, but I also didn’t fast for it like the lab says to because my Dr. told me not to.
Now I have to go in for the 3hr. one (which sucks) and I’m concerned I’m going to fail, even tho I know I don’t have gestational diabetes because I’ve been monitoring my blood glucose with a meter at home for the last 2 days and its been completely normal.
The thing is, I read somewhere that low-carb diets can affect the test. Well I’m on a low-carb diet but they never asked me that when they did the test. And if my body isn’t used to taking in that much sugar (becauase I rarely eat sweets, don’t eat pasta, potatoes, corn, or peas, and if I have bread or rice its low carb, high fiber bread or brown rice) my blood sugar would spike a lot more dramatically frpm drinking straight glucose.

I don’t see my Dr. until after the test so should I just wait till I get the results from her and then if they’re high tell her about my diet and show her the journal I’ve been keeping on my home blood sugar monitoring? (And if they’re not high just say nothing?)

Has anyone else ever failed the first test and passed the second? Or failed because of a low carb diet?

I just need a little advice and/or reassurance.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

I was diagnosed with Impaired Fasting GLucose early on in the pregnancy. I am now 25 weeks. I have been monitoring my glucose. I never have a problem with after meal levels but just the fasting. My fasting levels usually range from 86-95. My most common fasting glucose readings range from 90-92. I went to the doc today and she said she is thinking of getting me started on insulin because of the consistent above normal numbers. Also, I got preeclampsia with my first pregnancy and she said, it is better to keep it low because of the link between preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. But then, I cant help but second guess at the back of my mind if my numbers are really that high or high enough to start taking insulin? I want to know others’ experience. Although if the doc gets me started on it, i will definitely obey since it’s for baby’s safety. I hope to hear your thoughts. THanks :o)

2 questions about gestational diabetes test?

1st question: is the glucose tolerance test the same thing as the gestational diabetes test?
2nd question: How is the test performed as far as the blood sample? Is it just a finger poke or do they actually stick a needle in your arm and take a vial of blood? I really hate needles but I wouldn’t mind a finger poke at all. :)

Thanks!

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes recently, and when checking my blood sugar today it has been really high. More than double what it should be. My doc gave me guidelines as to what it should be, but not what constitutes an emergency.

Hi i am currently 28 weeks pregnant and i got gestational diabetes and now i have to follow a proper diet and regular exercise and after all this my sugar level is controlled but sometimes its just under the required level, i mean sometimes it comes 6.9 or 7.0mmol/l after meal and 5.4 (fasting). So i was just wondering if its still not good for me and baby or there is nothing to worry on that?

How early would gestational diabetes set in?

I’m at 7 weeks and I’ve been EXTREMELY thirsty throughout the past 4 weeks or so. I know that could be a symptom of gestational diabetes, and I have every intention of asking my dr. about it, but for now. What’s the usual time it starts or symptoms start showing?

I am trying to find out more about the history of gestational diabetes. I am finding plenty of articles about people having a personal or family history of it, but what I am looking for is when the medical community starting using the phrase "gestational diabetes" rather than only talking about diabetes and pregnancy. I found an article from 1986 in a medical journal that mentions it, but nothing before that.

Does anybody know where there might be more information about this?
