My question is about diabetes type 1?

My brother has diabetes type 1…and gives himself injections of insulin depending on how many carbs he eats. I heard it is bad even if he gives himself an injection to eat chocalate/cookies/ice cream/etc.
My question is…is this true??

I am pretty new to this diabetic thing. I am type 1. I was just confused if I had to take insulin for little snacks. For instance I just had a little bag of peanuts that has 11g of carbs. Is that negligible or should I take some?

I’m taking less medicine then usual, less activity, and eating the same amount of carbs at each meal that I’ve eaten for years and still I’m running low blood sugars. I"ve done a glucose control check on my meter and test strips and they are in range. Any ideas on what could be happening and ideas on what to do?

This along with Daily exercise and Better sleeping habits

Also for the Pasta and Bread- Should I be eating Whole Wheat or White Bread?

How can I mantain my insulin levels stable?

I found this on an article:

"As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, your insulin levels will balance out and in result balance other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean tissue will be gained even without exercise."

How can I get those 9 grams carbs per hour?

this is difficult to write, my doctor told me I was type 2 diabetic – there were several factors for this to be untrue, i even had a second opinion and further tests, which left me and the doctors wondering whether I was even diabetic at all.

Anyway I was in total denial – but then last week my eyes went very blurry – i went to the opticions and they said my eyes looked fine but she did me a prescription for glassess. I didnt pick them up or chose any yet. then yesterday I woke up and could see perfectly fine. so now im doubting the fact that they said im not diabetic.

anyway, losing my vision properly for those few days really stressed me and worried me.. so Iive decided im going to live as a diabetic. im 24… I feel so so ashamed to be type 2 at this age. My mum is so… I told you so and that it is all my fault.. well it probably is… but I can’t go back now.

The last few days this has been my general diet. I work shifts so it is sometimes hard.

Breakfast: 2 slices of Burgens bread with a small bit of peanut button on.

Lunch: usually a tuna salad, or cheese and cut up peppers

Dinner: Sauage and sala, or steak and salad, yesterday I did have some new potatos (i have read potatoes you should not have many due to the carbs.

sometimes if im hungry I have 2 nairns cracker things with tiny bit of peanut butter and cheese in the late evening, is that ok?

I do have a meter but cannot afford the strips atm and doc says i cant get them as type 2 anyway
i have had an ogtt, it came back 11.1 but the doctor doubts it as i was ill at the time it was done… and my readins have been normal since. however i question it now due to my bluury vission for 3 days
and two doctors told me as a diabetic type 2, you cant get them on prescription they said i dont need to test all the time
i know diet doesnt determine diagnosis. im just asking… IS my diet ok???

I watched a video that said things like whole wheat bread and pasta, health cereals and crackers all have carbs that make your blood sugar go up and hold onto fat? Or something like that, like eating them is not good if you want to lose weight. Is this true?

My mom had told me diabetes was caused by eating too much sugar, but I found out it was a myth! So, what exactly causes it? What’s the role of food with a lot of carbs?

And the insulin — what happens when the pancreas produces too much?

I would like answers from people who actually know about this, not from people who think they know but are not sure.

Help, my blood sugar is at 250?

I am a new diabetic and my blood sugar is at 250. I am type 1 and I have kept it under 180 for the last 5 weeks, but today it jumped. I must have messed up when I counted my carbs. How do I get my levels back under control. Is 250 high enough to panic? Do I need to go to the ER or am I alright?

Okay, I routinely get one or two thumbs downs on nearly every answer in this section. No problem, it doesn’t bother me that much. If you are one of those doing it because of my repeated claims that nurses (and doctors) aren’t all that knowledgeable when it comes to diet and diabetes, read this and tell me where I’m wrong:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgtNL06FUUNXheJefQvFqyvsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071011201431AAKdww9&show=7#profile-info-VfBaveaJaa

Be sure to note that both ladies claim to be nurses. Also note that glucerna is hardly sugar free.
Slightly better balanced, but glucerna still misses the target folks. I’m still waiting for a best answer. Any nutritionists out there? Where’s Dr. McDougall when you need him?
If you were truly trying to help, then you wouldn’t be saying something is sugar free when it isn’t. Glucerna has slightly fewer calories than Ensure, but 140 calories (from sugar and carbs) is still significant. Plus, who needs all that sodium. Come on, you can’t seriously recommend that stuff, can you?
nursekuba… yes, Glucerna only has 6 grams of sugar (24 calories) but you’re ignoring the 27 grams of carbs (108 calories). Giving either Ensure or Glucerna to a sick diabetic with elevated blood glucose is nothing short of criminal. The last thing this poor guy needs is more sugar or carbs (which become sugar). He needs healthy foods like good old raw vegetables and maybe a little chicken breast or fish… not some concocted commercial "smart nutrition" crap.
Between JustMe, Silva, and kevinmccleanblack, I’m impressed. It warms my heart to see people who can actually think on their own. Best Answer will come tomorrow after I sleep on this. Good job everyone and good night.

Hey please help answer my question, i have a diabetic father who doesnt take his diabetes seriously and always is eating high sugar foods like ice cream and for the past year i have been trying to encourage him to change his diet but he doesnt listen and doesnt care. I am getting to the point when i might forget helping him and let him do what he wants and face the health consequences because all my energy is being wasted trying to help him with no cooperation.

Anyway my family including my dad eats alot of carbs. We eat alot of meals based around potatoes, rice, pasta and bread in some form and there is not a day that goes by without a meal like this, sometimes over twice a day. I know that these carbs have a high glycimic index and therefore i am asking is this a bad diet for both my family and my dad? I think it will worsen his diabetes and increase the risk of me and other family members developing diabetes in the future.

Also any tips on motivating my dad to take his illness more seriously will be appreciated!

does eliminating carbs cure diabetes?

Hi there, my whole life scince i can remember i always have been eating junk, im not fat, but however i literally remember everyday of my ife eating some time of sugary foods. I literaly go out of my way to buy some. Now i was on yahoo answers and i looked up why my upper inner thighs were dark when the rest of my legs are white. Someone suggested diabetes may be a cause. Then i remembered my sister telling me the reason we have dark eye circles and were only teens is because we have too much sugar. Then i remembered that dark eye circles are like bruises from the calliparies around our eyes. So then i remember Dr. oz on Oprah, he said that diabetes, the sugar is like glass through your veins, and everytime it slashes them until it forms a scab that gets bigger and then a stroke or heart attack happens. So my question is can diabetes be the reason for my under eye circles or am i over reacting. We dont have health inssurance so i dont think my parents will take me to the doctor.

Will eating 0 carbs get rid of diabetes. I did it before to lode weight and it worked. Im really scared im ready to change my lllife style. I just figured this out right now and now im really worried.

Helpful cookbooks for gestational diabetes?

I am 14 weeks pregnant with twins, and found that I have gestational diabetes. Therefore, my OB has asked that I follow a diabetic food plan, but that I must be aware to consume the necessary caloric allotment of 3,200 daily. That is a lot of calories when almost eliminating carbs! Does anyone out there have a suggestion for a helpful (and easy) cookbook designed for women with gestational diabetes? I am sure I could use any diabetic cookbook, but am hoping for one geared more towards pregnant women, to help me get enough nutrition and calories in. Your help is appreciated.

Oh, and consuming meat is either hit-or-miss for me daily, as my morning sickness still lingers some days.
ADD: Yes, I am fully aware of the fact that I could easily look online. However, the whole point of using YA is to get actual perspectives and ideas. (Otherwise, wouldn’t the suggestion of just using Google pretty much eliminate about 95% of the questions on YA)
