Always keep a bottle of orange juice in the fridge or car at all times. If you start to have a black out or go into one slowly give him the orange juice down your throat gently and it will bring him/her around, then the best thing to eat is peanut butter to give you a boost. Other than that for keeping the sugar down in your body. Eliminate starch and eat a regular amout of meat and eat as much stir fried veggies cooked or not until full. you are never hungry the problem with starch is it turns to sugar in the body so if you eliminate starch and eat as much veggies as you want with regular meat potion you will notice a big difference. Some people need a bit a sugar and if so then eat a bit of starch but try to keep it to 2-3 servings which means 2-3 slices of bread a day or none if you can do it. it helps loose weight but if you are not concerned about weight then keep some starches in your diet. take care Heather

Avoid too many starches, or foods rich in sugar. I've also noticed that when your sugar is on the rise, caffeine can actually slow down the process. It also helps to engage in some type of exercise daily, even if it's just walking.

Keeping the blood sugar low is very tough especially when you have a sweet tooth. to keep the blood sugar low, it is very detrimental to keep taking the medication at the time the doctor has prescribed it. Aside from this, decrease the sugar intake. for e.g. if have a cup of tea, don't add sugar or if you can't tolerate it use sweeteners. As much as possible don't add sugar. Avoid pastries and cakes which are very high in sugar. Even fruits have it's own sugar. he can eat fruits but in small quantities. Also avoid sugary drinks like cola and fruit juices.

Exercise daily, and eat a well-balanced diet, leaving off desserts. I've gone from being a Type 2 diabetic on insulin to having normal blood sugars without any meds by eating a low-fat, low-sodium vegan diet, watching portions of course, and exercising every day. This new way of eating and exercising are a change in lifestyle for me, but it beats the change in lifestyle than complications from diabetes would bring.

What do you mean, doctors don't entertain such queries? If his doctor won't discuss dietary concerns, which are essential with diabetes, he needs a new doctor!!!

He needs to be eating complex carbohydrates. That means things like simple sugars, candy, cookies, pies, donuts, white flour, plain white rice, sodas, drinks with lots of sugar, fruit juices should be kept to a minimum. He can eat fruit, but should also have some healthy fat and whole grains with it to prevent blood sugar spikes. He should eat 3 medium sized meals a day and 2 healthy snacks, to help keep his blood sugar level fairly even. He should also exercise regularly, which will help keep his blood sugar down.
If his doctor has not provided him with a diet plan, or at least sample meal plans, he should get a different doctor. He should also make an appointment with a dietician who can explain some of the dietary changes that will help him control his blood sugar.
