Fasting blood glucose slightly high- worried?
Long story, so bear with me. I am 13 weeks pregnant and was discussing OGTT with my obstetrician yesterday. I can’t have a traditional OGTT done because I have periodic paralysis- the glucose may cause a serious paralytic attack. So instead my doctor decided to give me a blood glucose meter and monitor me over time to see if I am developing gestational diabetes. (I know, it’s kinda early, but he felt it was best to get a baseline.)
He told me to test twice a day- one test as soon as I get up, and another test one hour after a meal. So far so good, but this morning when I tested my blood, the reading was 102 (I hadn’t eaten for about 10 hours). It’s made me kinda nervous, since I have a pretty strong family history of diabetes (my parents and sibling don’t have it, but my grandparents and aunts and uncles do). My post-meal tests have been normal so far, but I can’t help wondering if this might mean pre-diabetes. I did read, though, that illness and stress can cause a change in readings. Right now I have a cold and I sprained my knee, which has had me resting for the last 3 days; could that be causing a high reading? Thank you so much to all who answer!

Yes, it’s true. ANY sort of stress can cause an elevated blood glucose reading. Not to worry, though. 102 is no big deal. Just keep an eye on it and look for trends over time. Insulin resistance takes a long time to develop and it’s pretty easy to deal with… just eat healthy, natural foods, minimize or avoid packaged, refined products, and stick to a daily exercise regimen.
