The high number could be from the cold and stress the sprained knee has had on your body. 102 is not too high. You shouldn’t get worried about a one time high like 102. Keep track of your tests and let your Dr. know. He is monitoring your baseline now. After about 24 weeks, you will know if you have GD or not. You should monitor what you are eating as well.
I had my Glucose test about a month ago.. Mine read 109.. i didnt eat anything after midnight and my doctors appointment was at 9am. My doctor told me that anything under 140 was fine, now, im not sure what kind of difference it makes with not having drank the ‘special kool-aid’ as my nurse calls it, but if mine was 109 and the doctor said it was fine, then i dont see how 104 could be bad…
A fasting of 102 is not that bad. Just give your OB a call in the morning and if you are really concerned about it, ask for a consult with a Diabetic Educator or Diabetes RN. You usually have an hour long appt with the Educator/Specialist and they also go over diet with you. At 13 weeks, it would not be Gestational Diabetes, but Type 2 if you were diagnosed. Hang in there!
I actually took care of my diabetic grandmother so I know quite a bit about diabetes. 102 before a meal is not bad at all. I generally run around 80 before and after meals and I don’t have diabetes. With my Nana we wanted her to be at a normal range, which was 120 before meals and 2 hours after meals to be around 140. She got insulin if she was 120 before the meal if she was under we would wait for her to his 120 before giving a dose. The only time is was serious was if she went over 200 after she had her insulin.
That reading is a normal reading. As long as you are between 80-160 at all times and there is no sugar in your urine then there is no cause for concern.
102 is NOT bad! Don’t worry. It’s is slightly high but every doctor has a different opinion on the numbers. Some say under 95 fasting, some under 100, some under 105, my last doctor said under 110 was fine. I really wouldn’t worry about a 102. I had gestational diabetes with both of my kids and have hovered around the borderline since having my daughter. My fasting was 122 months ago and my doctor didn’t classify me as diabetic.
I think you will be ok, just monitor your diet if you are really concerned. I’m sure your doctor will be willing to send you to a nutritionist to discuss a diabetic diet if you asked. They break it down into very simple steps. Easy to follow rules for eating carbs. But I really don’t think you have anything to worry about here.
And just curious, can your doctor test your hemoglobin A1C to see if you are diabetic or is that not an option for you? It’s just a blood test.
Or would you be able to do a fasting blood draw, eat breakfast and come back and do a 1 hour blood draw in the second/ third trimester (when you are more likely to develop GD)
Your doctor is right in needing to get a baseline. The most accurate test is of course the fasting test after which they give you a drink and test your body’s ability to process sugar but because your condition makes this test potentially harmful then long term monitoring would help the doctor determine if you are developing gestation diabetes. Given you are not already diabetic one high level is not enough to diagnose GD and should not concern you unless it remains high or spikes after meals. With your post-meal readings being normal you have nothing to worry about at this point. Talk with your doctor about your concerns and make sure you ask questions at your next appointment, knowing what to look for may ease your mind. Good luck.
Hi! I am diabetic, and the 102 reading is completely normal. Blood sugar readings are typically supposed to be between 80-102 and a doctor probably wouldn’t be at all concerned if it was two points over the norm. In pregnancy, when you test above 140, they will usually take immediate action, because this is when they typically diagnose gestational diabetes. Being ill can affect your blood sugar, as well as stress and worry. It can make you readings jump all over the place. Sounds like you don’t have much to worry about, but it’s good that the doctor is monitoring you so if there was any change he could deal with it at once. My gluclose levels were above about 180 when I was pregnant, and previously they were about 140-150, so I have always been "pre-diabetic" and finally developed it after I had my girl. Good luck to you, but sounds like you’re doing well!
my doctor told me that anything fasting should be below 70 and anytime after eating it should be really close to 100 i believe. i highly doubt that resting would cause a high reading, as your body would have more energy to break down the sugar if anything.
I had gestational diabetes with my son and diabetes runs in my family as well…on both sides. I wouldn’t get too concerned yet. 102 really isn’t high but if you do have gestational diabetes they are very tight on what your blood sugar should be. Anything around 90 is good for your morning test and after meal tests should be around 120. You’ll find that a little exercise (even a 10 minute walk) will lower your blood sugar. My morning and evening blood sugars were a little high throughout my pregnancy. The best thing to do is control your diet now. When I was pregnant I controlled my diabetes through diet. I woke up and tested, then ate a breakfast of no more than 40 grams of carbs. Two hours later I would test again and then have a snack of no more than 15 grams of carbs. I waited 2 more hours then had lunch, again with no more than 40 grams of carbs. Two hours later would test and then have another snack of no more than 15 g carbs. Waited 2 hours then had dinner with no more than 40g carbs then tested after 2 hours. Before bed I ate another snack of 15 g carbs. If I didn’t eat a small snack before bed my sugar would be higher in the morning so my diabetes specialist stressed that I had a snack before dinner because my body would think I was starving and start producing sugars. Just remember wait 2 hours between meals or snacks, meals should be no more than 40g carbs and snacks no more than 15g. According to my dietitian it was extremely important to have snacks between meals. Things like peanut butter, nuts and cheese didn’t count. They referred to them as "free" so I didn’t have to count them. I snacked on those a lot. Also be sure that you are testing correctly. Always wash your hands before you test and dry them completely with a paper towel. If you use a dish towel the smallest trace of food could cause a high reading. Hope this helps!
I have gestational diabetes….they are really strict with the numbers…your fasting sugar level should be under 90….and two hours after meals, it should be under 120. Here is what i have been doing:
remember, no cakes and bakery items…they are seriously bad for you.
1. cut out carbs and sugars altogether or replace them with better substitutes…get smart balance peanut butter and have it with an apple…replace white bread with multigrain bread..eat foods high in fiber…remember, even foods like milk and yogurt (which i always thought were essential for pregnant women) have high levels of sugar in them! i normally eat an egg and dark wheat toast in the morning, with fiber-rich strawberry jam, a turkey sandwich and salad in the afternoon, i have like 4/5 crackers or wheat thins for a snack, and then half a cup of rice with lentils and salad and chicken at night. Remember the darker the bread the lower the carbs and sugar
2. Exercise!! the more you move, the better you will feel and the faster you will burn the sugar! I move a lot more and this has helped me keep the weight of the baby down….
3. Remember to take your prenatal vitamins….all the vitamins you can’t get naturally are being provided by your prenatals….
Its not necessary that you have gestational diabetes, but adhering to this diet and these few strict rules until you know for sure can’t hurt….you don’t want to hurt your baby or yourself…
also, every now and then when i test my fasting levels, i get over 90, so don’t worry too much about it….and sugar levels can be easily controlled with diet! hang in there…it’ll be ok.
