Since so many of your relatives have type 2 diabetes, you are at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disorder where the body attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. If auto-immune disorders run in your family, that would put you at a higher risk for developing type 1 diabetes. I have type 1 and both of my grandmothers have thyroid disorders and an aunt of mine has celiac’s disease so I was at a higher risk for type 1 diabetes than most people. Type 1 diabetes is also not only genetic; it is usually triggered by something, such as a virus.
