Type 2 Diabetes, rapid weight loss, and D.A.F.N.E.?

I was recently diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes in November, 2009.

The problem I have is that there isn’t much I can eat due to having high cholesterol too.
I am losing about 5 pounds of weight a week.

I will not eat vegetables so that is out.
I am not on any medications whatsoever either. I can usually eat 10g to 15g of carbs without spiking too much.

Anything more than that and I have to walk for 30 minutes for every 20g of carbs I eat. Since it’s wintertime, I won’t be able to walk if at all. I am not healthy enough to exercise indoors.

What can I do to be able to eat so my rapid weight loss is slowed down? At the rate I am losing weight, I will be dead by this august.

Remember, no carbs due to blood sugar problems, no fat or cholesterol due to high cholesterol & high triglycerides. And no veggies due to abuse issues when I was very young. I am now 49 years old. Chicken and fish will get really old really fast, no matter how you prepare it.

I am very tired all the time too and my muscles scream in pain if I walk too much at one time or too many times a day.

My doctor’s office seems to be incompetent. They checked my lipid profile and did not check to see how much insulin I was actually making. They just assumed I was a Type 2 based on my GTT of 294. If not enough insulin, then I need that addressed. If plenty, then only insulin resistant.

I want to use fast acting insulin for mealtime only – dose on eating. My last (and only) a1c was 6.8 .
Diet and exercise just isn’t going to work for me.
My dietitian wants me to eat 75g of carbs 3 times a day plus 2 snacks. I refuse to do this as I do not want my blood sugars in the 300 range every day. I want to keep my eyes and toes and kidneys.

Right now, my average blood sugars via testing are about 113 for the past month, and that’s including the spikes.

What can I eat to slow the rapid weight loss rate? Remember, NO VEGGIES, NO FAT, NO CHOLESTEROL, NO SUGAR, NO CARBS.

Do I just knuckle under and eat anyway, hoping that I don’t go blind to lose my toes? Or have a heart attack from too high a cholesterol level?

If all it takes is an a1c level above 7.0 to get insulin, I can just eat a bunch of frosted cinnamon rolls every day.

D.A.F.N.E. is Dose Ahead For Normal Eating. In essence, take a shot of insulin so you can eat and have a NORMAL life. I only want to eat one or two large meals a day, around 125-150g each. I am not looking to abuse insulin to have a sugary chocolate malt or anything. And maybe once a month eat a REAL meal, say about 250g of carbs like spaghetti and meatballs, or even pizza.

I am ONLY diabetic when I eat. Not eating, and I have perfectly NORMAL blood sugar levels.

What am I to eat? What am I to do? How do I convince my doctor to give me insulin and not pills? I want to save what’s left of my beta cells for when I really need them, in my old age. Insulin will help this, but pills won’t.

I don’t know how to get my doctor to accommodate my needs. Doctor shopping is too expensive.

I am not living, I am existing. The treatment of diabetes is both to keep you alive AND restore some semblance of a normal life. I have neither. Eat, walk, eat, walk. Over and over every day.

I am just in a quandary over this horrible disease.

Any credible and practical suggestions?

In 16 weeks I will weigh less than 80 pounds but should weigh at least 135-150.

For me, Diabetes is a death sentence.

I am interested in attacking my type 2 diabetes with natural supplements. I currently take cinnamon, red rice yeast, biotin, folic acid as well as prescription meds Lovazza, Actos and Diovan (for high blood pressure). I would like to concentrate more on a holistic approach and get away from the ‘scripts.

I’ve heard about turmeric for use as an anti-inflammatory and wonder if anyone has any experience with this for type 2?

Thanks very much!

My medical doctor is clueless about vitamins but has the attitude "if it works, go for it".

How cinnamon helps to prevent diabetes to develop?

Since my experience with doctors back in Hungary 30 yrs ago I have lost trust of them, even the whole saduceus system, they use, and I am healthy at age 64 by seeking homeopathic medicines when my need arises.
Something I have heard about cinnamon, can you give a short description of its benefits?

Gestational Diabetes?

When they do a blood test to screen for birth defects, do they also screen for gestation diabetes as well, or is that only when they do the glucose test later on in the pregnancy? I got the blood tests results back and they said everything was fine. They’ve also done urine tests to make sure my urine is ok and it has been.
For the past few weeks I’ve had a hankering for sweets but watch how much I eat, like maybe ice cream twice a week, oreos twice a week and maybe a cinnamon roll. I’m worried about getting diabetes. I’m feeling fine though.
I know they say one of the symptoms of getting gestational diabetes is excessive weight gain. I’ve gained 18 pounds and I’m 23 weeks and 1 day along. Is that bad. Here’s my weight gain break down.

May – 4 pounds
June – 2 pounds
July – 2 pounds
August – 5 pounds
September – 5 pounds ( month isn’t over)

I guess I maybe a bit paranoid… but I know the majority of the weight gain will be in the end of the second and third trimester, but I don’t want to gain too much weight where it is excessive…

Please give me your thoughts… Thank you!!! =)

cinnamon helping the body produce more insulin..?

my dad has diabetes. he read an article that said research has been done to prove that taking in cinnamon may help the body produce more insulin. he has looked around to see if they make pills that contain cinnamon (like how they make pills with garlic) but was unable to find any. perhaps it is a new development. so he has been putting cinnamon in his coffee and on his toast, but he does not know how much he needs to consume for this to take effect. does anyone have any insight on this? how much does he need? or is this even true?

So what’s the deal with Cinnamon vitamins?

I took them for like a week and a half. And I might be crazy, but it seems like they did two things: gave me more energy, and hurt my stomach.

Does it give people energy? And why would it hurt my stomach?
I understand they are good for people with diabetes, which I don’t have.
What are the benefits of taking them if you aren’t diabetic?

4)Why dried apricots are better than fresh, Dried apricot with seed is better or one with the seed removed.

5)How does potassium help diabetics

6)Good Resources from where I can get more info on cinnamon , Dried apricots, potassium and detailed info on fruit for diabetes.

Replies from the experienced and senior members will be appreciated.
Sue and MamaSmurf thanks for the replies but I seen many seniors mentioning that cinnamon and dried apricots are helpful.

Cinnamon is BAD???

I have been struggling with border-line type two diabetes for a few months…trying to get my blood glucose numbers lower, to ward off the risk of gestational diabetes … (TTC)…I read that cinnamon is really good for diabetics…So I followed an herbal recipe for cinnamon tea… 6 sticks of cinnamon boiled in 2 cups of water, for 20-30 minutes, drink with honey and milk…

I just now read that cinnamon in large quantities should be avoided during pregnancy!!! Becasue it has abortive qualities!!!

I only drank 3-4 sips maybe..maybe a bit more…I thought I tasted funny! About 3-5 days ago (I can’t remember?)

I think I could be pregnant, at 10 DPO had negative HPT…But am going to re-test in a few days… Could it have been harmful??? Could that be why my test was negative???

I am kind of freaking out…
I guess freaking out is an over statement…Just very nervous… mostly becasue i’m not even sure if I am pregnant…

Diabetes and low-carb breads. The best one?

I have diabetes 2 and must eat low-carb foods. What whole grain bread is the best? All my low-carb breads are fat free and 0 grams of sugar. There is bread from Viva Low-Carb – 0 grams of carbs. Aunt Hatties whole grain bread at 5/6 carbs and Chompies cinnamon raisin bread at 1 gram of carb (5 grams of fiber), Chompies Multigran – 2 grams of carbs and Chompies plain bread with 2 grams of carbs. None of these breads contain any sugar. I am trying to lose weight and was wondering if there are any ingredients in these breads that would be bad for me in trying to lose weight.
I believe that the 100 whole grain wheat bread is NOT as good as the multi-grain bread. I am trying to diet with low-carb foods and find these low-carb breads helpful. I eat a lot of sandwiches with 0-carb meat and mustard. I am not losing weight too quickly here and was wondering if I am eating the right bread. Which one is the best?

I heard dandelion tea was good for the liver, and cinnamon in tea is good for diabetes, etc. But how many cups do I have to drink? I just don’t get it. Can I have a mug of dandelion once in a while to help out my liver or does just having one cup do nothing? I don’t get it. I’m confused!
