Atkins Diet- Anyone using this to treat diabetes?
Is anyone here using the Atkins diet to treat their diabetes?
I’ve lost weight with this before, it’s a decient diet and got rid of a lot of my problems, but I went off of it. I am now prediabetic and thinking about going back to it, but not sure. My dr. said she wanted me on a diabetic lowcarb diet, but she didn’t give me anymore information than that. She also aggreed and supported me when I was on Atkins.
I’ve thought about other diets as well. I’ll probably call her the next time she’s in her office and ask, but was checking to see if anyone else has done well with Atkins for controling diabetes?
I need to loose weight, dr.’s orders.

people have died from the atkins diet, especially diabetics. dont do it.
Exercise and good eating - Atkins is too much protein and hard on your kidneys and arteries (cholesterol)
I’m prediabetic too and have used the Atkins diet. I feel so good when I am on it, so I think it is ideal. Bad news is, I never could stick to it. Don’t know why when it made me feel so much better. But if you’re not eating carbs, that fits in nicely with what you need to do with diabetes
Atkins is very low carb and therefore does not require large amounts of insulin to metabolise. The problem is that if you are on insulin therapy you need to balance your insulin with carbs otherwise you will end up with dangerous hypoglycemia. If your not on insulin then the atkins diet may be benificial to you. You need to do this in consultation with your docor. Jules, Australia.
Atkins can be too taxing on your system long term. You need good, low - glycemic carbs to function. Diabetics aren’t the only people who should eliminate refined sugars. The best system ( for a lifetime) I have found is the Transitions system by Dr. Shari Lieberman.
The Sugar Buster’s Diet is much better for controlling diabetes as it teaches you how to eat correctly all of the food groups and what types of carbs are best for you, such as low glycemic index foods. In addition, you will have a better chance of making a lifestyle change using Sugar Buster’s than on Atkins.
Ask your Dr. about the diabetic diet. It’s recommended by the ADA, and my dietician ordered me to do it when I was diagnosed. After all, you need some carbohydrates to survive. It really just follows the food pyramid, and spreads it out over the course of the day, so your body doesn’t go into hunger mode and decide it’s going to start "saving" as many calories as it can get as fat.
Atkins is wonderful for blood sugar control E me for good recipes oddmom3@yahoo.com. It’s a lot more fun than the old days
South Beach is not as strict and easier to manage. I’ve been doing it for two months now and have lost a little over 18 lbs. My blood-sugar levels are very good right now too.
