They’re not the same at all. Diabetes mellitus is associated with increased glucose (sugar) in your blood – in other words, HYPERglycemia. HYPOglycemia is just the opposite – low sugar in your blood.
The ‘classic’ symptoms of diabetes are excessive eating, excessive thirst, and frequent urination (peeing). If this goes on long enough, you can see weight gain followed by weight loss.
The ‘classic’ symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) are quite different, and include sweating, dizziness, palpitations (heart flutters), and extreme hunger.
No matter which you might think you have, both can be quite serious and you should see a doctor to talk about your concerns.

and two, my mom is hypo, and my dad is diabetic, and no the symptoms aren’t the same. how you relize you have either is by asking your doctor….

With hypoglycemia, you may feel cold and clammy. It is not the same as diabetes mellitus. With diabetes mellitus, you may have hypoglycemia (if you are diagnosed and overdose on insulin) or hyperglycemia (which is the main symptom of DM). You will need to consult your physician to have pancreatic tests done to see if your beta cells are producing enough insulin.

Hypoglycemia is a problem caused by diabetics taking too much insulin and not enough food. The brain must have a constant supply of sugar or it shuts down. If the sugar is all used up by the insulin there is none left for the brain to function. Non-diabetics can become a little hypoglycemic but is not usuallly life threatening like it is with diabetes and insulin.

The first time a person with diabetes gets a low glucose reaction—usually at a glucose level of about 54 mg/dl, he or she usually gets shaky, sweaty, and hungry. Other symptoms include anxiety and nausea. These are very much like the symptoms you get when you are extremely nervous and are called autonomic symptoms. It’s your body’s way of telling you that your glucose is low and you should eat.

Well there is the type of diabetes that causes the sugar in your blood to rise (hyperglycemia), and then there is the type of diabetes that causes the sugar in your blood to drop (hypoglycemia).
So the answer to your question is, hypoglycemia is a sign of diabetes.
However, there are those who don’t have diabetes but do suffer from hypoglycemia when they don’t eat well, skip meals, or have a family history of diabetes.
You can find out if you have hypoglycemia by taking your blood glucose. They sell the apparatus at the store. It consists of poking the tip of your finger with a smal tiny needle (it shouldn’t hurt) and then placing a drop of blood onto a strip where the machine will read the amount of glucose in your blood. If it is above a certain level you are hyper glycemic, and if it’s below a certain level you are hypoglycemic. If you fall in between you are normal.
You can find out if you have diabetes by going to your physician and asking to be tested for it. The most commong method is, they have you pee in a cup and they send that cup to the lab. In the lab they test it and determine if you are diabetic or not.
The best way to cope with this disease, is to exercise and eat a healthy diet.
