I had peripheral neuropathy. I had terrible pain in my legs and about three times a week I was falling, when the signal for the knee muscles to tighten up would get short circuited. The doctor said nothing could repair the nerves.
I refused his pain drugs. I got on the internet and found out that I was probably vitamin D deficient. Most Americans are. Almost all diabetics are. Google it. I took 50,000 IU of vitamin D3 per day for three days and 10,000 IU per day since. The pain was gone within a week.
But I was still falling down. Again, google. I read about five studies done in Japan and Russia where the damaged sciattic nerves of test animals were regenerated with high doses of methylcobalamin. That is a particular form of vitamin B12.
I took 30mg per day for ten days and 10mg per day after that. It took about two months to be completely symptom free. It has been over nine months since I have fallen.
Once you have diabetic neuropathy, it is too late. The damage has already been done. The goal is to keep the blood sugars (glucose) levels in tight control so that this condition does not progress rapidly. There are medications that can help with the shooting pains. They need to work with their doctor on this.
keep your blood sugar level even. wear good shoes. keep your feet clean and dry
wear warm roomy shoes in the winter. wear roomy sandals with toe protection in the summer.
The initial step is good control of the diabetes which means a glycated (‘glycosylaled’ although commonly used is biochemically incorrect) hemoglobin A1C of 6.5% which approximates (the relationship between A1C and glucose is nonlinear) a 90 day mean (average) glucose of 141 mg/dL or 7.8 mmol/L. The approach to the treatment of diabetic neuropathy is to add medications one at a time until some degree of success is achieved. The medications are typically added in the following order: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as meloxicam and piroxicam, acetaminophen (Tylenol), occasionally so-called muscle relaxants most often cyclobenzaprine but never carisoprodol, drugs which work on the nerve synapse such as amitriptyline although there are many, drugs that work on the nerve membrane such as gabapentin but again there are many to choose from, and opioids such as tramadol. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you and your family the very best of health and in all things.
No natural ways, but moder medicine does have some medication to help this painful condition.
All Neuropathy is caused by damage to the nerves. The damage is done in Diabetes by high blood sugars. This creates a breakdown of the myelin sheath around the nerves. Without this protection the electrical signals are not transferred properly just like if you stripped the covering off the electrical wires in you house. Neuropathy is a condition where the nerves have sustained enough damage that there is noticeable numbness, pain or tingling.
It is becoming widely known that certain special forms of B vitamins have a lot to do with repairing nerve damage. Some people have tried large amounts of ordinary B1, B12 or B complex vitamins and they find that it does not help them. Ordinary B vitamins are water-soluble and they wash out of the body long before they get to the required levels needed in your blood stream sot that it can begin repairing nerve damage.
I found a good source of these specific vitamins at http://www.realfoondutrients.com/neuropathy/home.htm
Apparently, the owner of this company has diabetes which he treats with nutrients and then developed the neuropathy formula to deal with the damage done.
