Am I hypoglycemic or diabetic?

I haven’t been to a doctor yet, but am thinking I probably should soon. I’ve had some mild episodes lately where I feel literally a "drop" of energy, feel VERY uncomfortable (esp. driving!!), & usually if I haven’t eaten enough (ie, 4+ hours), drank too much caffeine or alcohol, etc. I notice I feel better (obviously) if I cut out caffeine & alcohol, but still feel a low sometimes from lack of food, which I usually haven’t a problem with before. But I also have bad eating habits, & really need to change this, such as eating big meals & not enough small ones, & the foods I eat (& don’t eat enough of)… it looks I can’t get away with this anymore. So my questions are can you be hypoglycemic without being a diabetic, or could I be diabetic? I know my grandma was diabetic, so there is some family history. I know the best answer is to see a doctor, but I’m curious as to what kind of doctor, what to tell them about symptoms I’ve been having, & what to expect. Thanks!
Also, I’m not overweight & well within my normal weight, & workout pretty regularly.

What are the rules of the diabetes diet?

My fasting blood sugar just tested a little high (102) so I’m interested in following a diabetes diet in order to prevent diabetes. How does it work? Are you mean to eat frequently or just three times per day? How do you incorporate fruits? For example, can I have a snack of strawberries alone or should they be combined in a meal?

Let me know if you know of any great online resources that provide a good overview.

I hear a lot of hype about energy drink and how they can harm your health but what i gather is mainly a spike in the blood sugar. I drink energy drinks but all of them i drink are sugar free. I just would like to know your take on these.

My brother is type 1 diabetes and he is 5 foot 11 inches and weighs 120 pounds, he has lost like 70 pounds in a few months. They say malnourished, but how can that be if he eats 3 big meals and 2 snacks everyday. These foods have nearly no sugar if possible because he has uncontrolable sugar levels. they run high mostly and are low in the morning or the opposite the next day or so. What is going on

I am looking for some sodas in AZ or to order online. I have found 4 flavors from Diet Rite. I read in a blog about Waist Watchers but it’s only sold back east and can not be ordered online. Do you know where I can find any other sodas that are calorie, caffeine & carb free made with Splenda and not aspartame or sacharrine?

Does a blood test pick up everything or must you ask?

I went to have a blood test for work to see if I am immune to rubella, german measles and the like… We have just started TTC and I am wondering if a lab test would pick up hcg in blood test (if I am pregnant) if the doctor has not specifically asked for it?

My daughter is now 9 years old and has been diabetic since she was a month old. We live in a very small town in Illinois consisting of 2,500 people. Children with diabetes that young is very rare in my town and my daughter feels like she is different from everyone else. Some of the children make fun of her at school because she has to go to the office to check her blood sugars and take extra steps when her count is high. I have always told her that diabetes is a serious condition, but that she is only different because of the way she has to eat. She has to take care of herself and be healthy. She knows what she can and can not have and obeys that most of the time. I just want her to feel like a kid and grow healthy at the same time. PS: I know I am an over protective mother, but wouldn’t you be if you were placed in the situation of having a new baby diagnosed with diabetes at 33 days old?
I agree with you. The reason she can’t do the blood test in her classroom is because of safety procautions to the other students. The school must maintain a safe/clean environment for the children.

I was just trying to help her, and even got her an appointment with the chief medical officer of slimband who speaks her language.

She’s 5’4" and about 150 lbs. She is always constantly complaining about pain and tiredness and headaches… frequently napping and doing nothing while most of the work is undone and she is constantly tired and stressed. Her BMI is 29, so she is considered overweight. I know her weight isn’t a big issue, however, I am looking into her health history that most of the problems that persists today are mostly originates from her weight and eating issues. She is a gluttonous person. Ever since she’s been diagnosed (I was suspicious at the fact that she always had diabetes type 2 for a while now), only now she’s been eating less. Though I know she won’t be able to persist with this kind of "diet" for long, knowing that she sneaks in snacks now and then, and eats whenever she is taking a break. She is usually hungry…

She kept saying I am crazy and stupid that she doesn’t need it and she is skinny. Haha, tell that to her big stomach….

I just want her to live a long healthy life without ME taking care of her. I want her to be similar to my grandma, who’s always active, on the go, and obviously not overweight like her.

I asked her to just come to the free consultation and meet with the doctor for just an hour or even less than that and she refuses… stupid woman. My dad kept criticizing that she doesn’t need it and says that the surgery (not knowing what it actually does and how the procedure works) will hurt her more (I know, it’s not about her weight.. it’s everything, I just want to reduce all that is bad because of her prolonged poor diet and lifestyle). He’s so ignorant….

My parents don’t speak, read, or write English. So they don’t know what this stuff is about, that’s why the one-on-one consultation with a professional doctor who speaks their dialect may help to further their understanding. I can’t show it to them because they are illiterate in English, and if I try to translate they will just refuse to listen. I just told her that it will help you lose weight. They have very good methods of ignoring me. They even told me to go back to my boyfriend’s place and stay there. I just got angry and yelled at both of my parents. Yelling my father to stay out of it, and yelled at my mother to remind her why she has diabetes, why she has so many illness, why does she need surgery so often, why is she always tired, having headaches, stomach pain, and etc…. she didn’t listen and said I was crazy and I asked her to see the doctor for one hour and she refused and said "I am skinny and those things are for obese people" and I go like, "so you’re gonna wait until it’s too late just to have this surgery that will take years to get the healthy results you may want?" It’s just long term procedure.

She said, "if you want me to be healthy, just be a good girl and stay home and give me money for a vacation!~!! *puts her hand out*"

I have no income, I use student loans to pull my trousers up for school and general stuff. wthhhh

Does my daughter have hypoglycemia?

My 14 month old has had several symptoms of hypoglycemia including tremors when eating, wakes in the night suddenly and very hungry and sweaty… lethargy, wakes in the morning very grumpy (out of character for her, as she is a happy-laid-back baby) and feels better within 30 mins of breakfast. I bought a blood glucose meter. Also ketone strips just to be sure she wasnt showing signs of being diabetic (she has been thirsty and urinating a lot more than usual, but we live in GA)– the ketone strips were neg. so she isnt spilling ketones into her urine… she hasnt gotten over 109 in 3 days with her blood glucose.

Someone recommended trying a "sugar load" test, here is what happened:
9am-before breakfast- BG was 51
-fed oatmeal with honey + 1 cookie
930am-BG level was 109
10am-BG was 69
11am-BG was 95

is this reactive hypoglycemia? can this be alleviated by diet? is this a sign of pre-diabetes?

I will be taking her into the Doc but wanted some advice/info in the mean time.

Thanks.

I just at some pizza for dinner and haven’t taken my insulin all day. I’m suffering from depression and it’s hard for me to have the will to take my insulin when necessary as I am a type 1 diabetic and I just found out I have diabetes type 1 10 months ago and I’m 21 years old and devestated. I talked to my doctor about this depression I’m having and they want me to see a couselor. In the mean time, I’m supposed to eat healthy and take the insulin they have specified, but I’m having a hard time dealing with it. So, id my blood glucose levels are in the 500′s….what could happen? I just took insulin to bring it down, but I need to know what to do right now.

I’ve only been diagnosed since this past April and I am already experiencing numbness and pain in my feet and my vision is getting blurry. Does this mean that I’ve had the illness for some time and didn’t know it? Should I be taking insulin or medication with these symptoms rather than relying on diet and exercise?

Also, I have depression that doesn’t respond to treatment with anti-depressants for very long. Could the diabetes be causing this? Would medication or insulin help stop the depression?
