I’m running a marathon in May 2010 and I’m looking for a good source for information on training and nutrition. This is going to be my first marathon and I’m worried about getting the proper balance of nutrition while I train. I’ve found some great training schedules and advice online, but I would like something more in-depth.

Type 2 Diabetes, rapid weight loss, and D.A.F.N.E.?

I was recently diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes in November, 2009.

The problem I have is that there isn’t much I can eat due to having high cholesterol too.
I am losing about 5 pounds of weight a week.

I will not eat vegetables so that is out.
I am not on any medications whatsoever either. I can usually eat 10g to 15g of carbs without spiking too much.

Anything more than that and I have to walk for 30 minutes for every 20g of carbs I eat. Since it’s wintertime, I won’t be able to walk if at all. I am not healthy enough to exercise indoors.

What can I do to be able to eat so my rapid weight loss is slowed down? At the rate I am losing weight, I will be dead by this august.

Remember, no carbs due to blood sugar problems, no fat or cholesterol due to high cholesterol & high triglycerides. And no veggies due to abuse issues when I was very young. I am now 49 years old. Chicken and fish will get really old really fast, no matter how you prepare it.

I am very tired all the time too and my muscles scream in pain if I walk too much at one time or too many times a day.

My doctor’s office seems to be incompetent. They checked my lipid profile and did not check to see how much insulin I was actually making. They just assumed I was a Type 2 based on my GTT of 294. If not enough insulin, then I need that addressed. If plenty, then only insulin resistant.

I want to use fast acting insulin for mealtime only – dose on eating. My last (and only) a1c was 6.8 .
Diet and exercise just isn’t going to work for me.
My dietitian wants me to eat 75g of carbs 3 times a day plus 2 snacks. I refuse to do this as I do not want my blood sugars in the 300 range every day. I want to keep my eyes and toes and kidneys.

Right now, my average blood sugars via testing are about 113 for the past month, and that’s including the spikes.

What can I eat to slow the rapid weight loss rate? Remember, NO VEGGIES, NO FAT, NO CHOLESTEROL, NO SUGAR, NO CARBS.

Do I just knuckle under and eat anyway, hoping that I don’t go blind to lose my toes? Or have a heart attack from too high a cholesterol level?

If all it takes is an a1c level above 7.0 to get insulin, I can just eat a bunch of frosted cinnamon rolls every day.

D.A.F.N.E. is Dose Ahead For Normal Eating. In essence, take a shot of insulin so you can eat and have a NORMAL life. I only want to eat one or two large meals a day, around 125-150g each. I am not looking to abuse insulin to have a sugary chocolate malt or anything. And maybe once a month eat a REAL meal, say about 250g of carbs like spaghetti and meatballs, or even pizza.

I am ONLY diabetic when I eat. Not eating, and I have perfectly NORMAL blood sugar levels.

What am I to eat? What am I to do? How do I convince my doctor to give me insulin and not pills? I want to save what’s left of my beta cells for when I really need them, in my old age. Insulin will help this, but pills won’t.

I don’t know how to get my doctor to accommodate my needs. Doctor shopping is too expensive.

I am not living, I am existing. The treatment of diabetes is both to keep you alive AND restore some semblance of a normal life. I have neither. Eat, walk, eat, walk. Over and over every day.

I am just in a quandary over this horrible disease.

Any credible and practical suggestions?

In 16 weeks I will weigh less than 80 pounds but should weigh at least 135-150.

For me, Diabetes is a death sentence.

I know that the answer has something to do with lactic acid, but how? What does glucose have to do with anything? I checked my bio book and the explanation is confusing!

My 8 year old son has Type 1, since he was diagnosed I have not worked, I spend most my time caring for him. Even while he is at school I’m in contact with his private Nurse, so far this year he has missed two weeks of school. His Diabetes is very severe and brittle. I’m wondering If I’ll ever be able to be a working Mom again….

But he hadn’t been fasting prior to the test – he wasn’t advsed to. Can a diagnosis be made from a non-fasting blood test? I suspect that he does have diabetes from the symptoms he is experiencing.

I took my blood sugar and it was 100. The last thing I ate was candy about an hour to two hours ago. Is that good, or at least not horrible?

Is it possible to inject insulin in your scalp?

Being a diabetic I have come to wonder if it is possible to use your scalp as an injection site for insulin. If I am not totally wrong then the scalp is more than 1 cm thick with subcutaneous fat and a very good blood supply of minute vessels. At least as I have seen that when you cut yourself in the scalp then you bleed easily and a lot. So insulin injection in your head should work fine? Maybe some parts of the head are better than others?

Mark Sisson says insulin is a major factor in fat gain and that it is NOT all about the calories.

Who is right?

Is it insulin or calories that get you fatter?

Using a meter without having diabetes?

For what other purposes can someone use a glucometer if they’re not diabetic? Like if you have hypoglycemia, etc?

Technorati Tags: , , , ,

I was wondering if your pancreas might continue to produce the amount of insulins it is used to producing and therefore cause your body to develop hypoglycemia?

This is so confusing. I need to know if this is alright. I just started my gestational diabetes low-carb diet. My three meals a day range from 30-45g of carbs while my three snacks range from 15-30g of carbs. I don’t want to keep eating just turkey sandwiches and fruits and vegetables. Would it be ok if I ate the following, as long as it is within carbohydrate guidelines?

For example ..
(3) chicken strips from Sheetz w/ nacho cheese – 26g carbs, no sugar
Grilled chicken wrap from Sheetz w/ cheddar cheese, cooked peppers & onions, bacon, & tomatoes – 31g carbs, 3g sugars
McChicken from McDonald’s w/o the bun, mayo, & lettuce (just the plain chicken patty) – 10g carbs

Can I eat this stuff (obviously not at the same meal or anything) since it’s within the carb guidelines I am supposed to follow?

Also .. some more examples .. not that I want to eat this stuff daily or anything, just using these as examples ..
Low Carb Options (each under 10g* of carbs):
• Low Carb WHOPPER® Sandwich* • (3g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (5g)
• Low Carb DOUBLE WHOPPER® Sandwich* • (3g)
• Low Carb DOUBLE WHOPPER® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (5g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER JR.® Sandwich* • (1g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER JR.® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (2g)
• Low Carb BK™ Double Stacker Sandwich* (5g)
• Low Carb BK™ Triple Stacker Sandwich* (6g)
• Low Carb BK™ Quad Stacker Sandwich* (6g)
** ALL WITHOUT THE BUN **

My numbers weren’t that bad they said, they didn’t give me exacts though, I’m going to ask them next time I go in. I’m not asking you to verify if my diet is good — I just want to know if I am counting carbs for a diabetic diet could I eat this stuff since the carbs are within guidelines? Obviously not for every meal every day, but maybe one meal a week or something like that.

Just to add — my levels today were -
Fasting – 81
1 hour after breakfast – 103
1 hour after lunch – 105
(didn’t have dinner yet .. and YES my doctor has me monitor ONE hour after a meal, not two!)
ok no need to lecture me on fast food alright i believe i clearly stated above that i do not eat this every day nor do i have any intentions on it i was just asking a simple question

Does rice have a good amount of nutrition or not?

I see that a lot of Asians eat rice and they are small boned with not too much meat on them. So is rice just like a side dish: something you shouldn’t depend on for vitamins?

Whenever I eat rice I have to consume at least 3 or 4 bowls; rice just doesn’t seem to satisfy my hunger. I also don’t feel like I am getting very much nutrition out of it.

I need to know the normal blood glucose level for gold fish, and the normal range which it may fluctuate. Also, is there a place online where I can find this kind of information?

Thank you for your help!

I am interested in attacking my type 2 diabetes with natural supplements. I currently take cinnamon, red rice yeast, biotin, folic acid as well as prescription meds Lovazza, Actos and Diovan (for high blood pressure). I would like to concentrate more on a holistic approach and get away from the ‘scripts.

I’ve heard about turmeric for use as an anti-inflammatory and wonder if anyone has any experience with this for type 2?

Thanks very much!

My medical doctor is clueless about vitamins but has the attitude "if it works, go for it".
